Margaret Louise Garaventa Hatton died on July 27, 2021, at the age of 101. She was born on September 18, 1919, to Louise and Joseph Garaventa on their ranch in Wadsworth, Nevada. She was one of five children delivered at home by Katherine Garaventa, her grandmother. Her siblings, Edward, Irene, Kathryn, and Joseph (Bud), preceded her in death. Margaret spent her childhood in Wadsworth where she attended school and graduated from Wadsworth High School at age 16. She married John Hatton in Reno in 1944 and was married for 54 years until his death in 1998.
Following high school, Margaret attended the University of Nevada for two years until she reached age 18 when she could begin her education to become a registered nurse. She completed her nursing education in 1941 at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, California. She returned to Reno where she practiced nursing at Saint Mary's Hospital for many years as a staff nurse, head nurse, and nursing supervisor. In 1967, she accepted a position as a school nurse with the Washoe County School District where she practiced until she retired in 1982.
Margaret was an avid golfer, bridge player, and traveler. One of her favorite trips was to Kenya with her sister-in-law, Delele Garaventa. Family, friends, and neighbors loved her backyard where she could be found tending her roses well into her 90s. Margaret also enjoyed cooking many Italian dishes with her family, especially her grandchildren.
This scholarship honors our memory of Margaret and her contributions.
